Wow, wombats have their own day in Australia. Wombat Day is on 22nd of October in Australia. In the rest of the world we have to wait 24 hours until 23rd of October for World Wombat Day to celebrate wombats...

I seem to remember the army used to have a Wombat recoil-less rifle at one stage, I had a model of one towed behind a land-rover I think. It didnt do cola cube style plops though.

Looks like wombats might be the unsung heroes during the terrible fires in Australia. Not only have they been sharing their burrows with koalas and wallabies but they have been seen actively encouraging other animals to seek shelter in their fire proof burrows.
Way to go wombats! You're all bloody superb...
