In the late 70's when I was a nipper, it went off a lot at away matches, usually drunken Stoke idiots starting it. Blackpool in 1978 was utter carnage. On the 6 o'clock news I seem to remember. Mansfield, Oldham, Burnley, and many others. A different sort of hooligan then turned up and the gang thing started, I have been to about 60/70 away grounds with stoke and the worst was indeed Birmingham, however the Zenith Data Systems Cup Final at Wembley between Chelsea and Middlesbough was another nightmare of a game. Blackpool 78, was that when the refreshments bar was laid to waste and the grass banks at the back of the stand were on fire when we left the ground? Yes it was, 2 hotels destroyed on the friday night and a drunken attempt to burn down the tower

I remember talking to one of my female clients, an Alex season ticket holder and child court welfare officer who's 14 year old son was kicked for no reason by a Stoke fan

I can take group violence as it happens and if you are caught up then I will fight my corner but that was really just not on

"Our boys always talk about getting battered at your place" Loads of others like this with different teams but the most embarrassing was sitting in a de-brief meeting for an England match. When the Chief of Police said there had been no problems at all apart from one incident in the car park after the match when a bus load of stoke fans had attacked and destroyed a bus of Bolton fans, the whole room just turned and looked at me

I saw a smidge of mither at a few away days with the lads last season. We got the train with a load of Stoke lads to Wigan, Wolves were en route to Blackburn on the same train. Absolutely no bother at all until we got out at Wigan and the Wolves lads started shouting as we got off, a Stokie picked up a bin from the platform and chucked it at them on the train. The police came into the pub about an hour later, marched him out and sent him home. I was also there for that bit of Bolton handbags... not amongst the trouble may I add. The Bolton 'trouble' was just cringeworthy. A bunch of teenage faggots giving it the 'come on' gestures, pretending to chase eachother for a bit before eventually getting bored and fucking off. Also the pretend clambering over the concrete barriers into the Bolton fans inside the ground. If you're going to get involved, at least have a bit of a fucking scrap. Many cunts on both sides that day. There's not a lot that goes on nowadays really. It's all organised and out of the way of the game if there's any at all.

My ladies old man talks about the trouble they used to get into in the 70's, whether it was sought after or not, said there were some proper fucking nutters back then. A lot of it kicking off at the Vic. Also said Stamford Bridge was a horrible place to go.

Went to bristol city twice in the space of four or so days in 94/95, one in the league and the other in the fa cup. Fucking kicked off big time in the ground at one of them, managers on the pitch with microphones telling everyone to chill out. Too late, it was like tactical warfare from the stokies. I've never been into this shit but most of the folk i used to go with didn't mind a dabble. Weird times.

Chelsea fans used to infitrate the Boothen End on a regular basis - as the game started they would start to chant, scuffles followed and the police would take them out and walk them to the away end. I gave up going to Stamford Bridge long before I gave up going to away games.

It's really difficult to judge other grounds as i only have experience of going with the rough necks from Stoke, may be it's just rough at these places when we go. I can't see Norwich fans getting the same reception on their travels as we do. I'm a lover not a fighter as Micheal Jackson once said and before you strat that's the only think i have in common with him..... apart from the offthewall connection obviously
