Shotton should be playing. Huth at RB is absurd. He's so slow on the turn it's beggars belief. The centre of midfield cannot continually be a place where we think we can hide Delap, he gives nothing bar the throw and Shotton is capable of delivering a long throw if not as well, certainly well enough to cause a problem. Fact is, most sides bar Arsenal have worked it out now. Palacios has start sooner rather than later, preferably with a player that can also play...Whelan at his best or Wilson would fit that role. Walters is fine out wide as a last resort but Pennant and Etherington should be automatic choices. Crouch doesn't deserve to walk into our team, Jones and Walters have done nothing to warrant being dropped so should continue until Crouch forces one of them out. By qualifying for the group stages, we've done what we needed to do in Europe this season, now the likes of Arismendi should be playing every game to give him time to play and learn. We have to start looking at why it is acceptable to play so deep against a team that were before Sunday were so low on confidence it's unbelievable. On average i'm pretty sure we'd be lucky to amass 11 points away on our travels in three seasons. Personally i'd rather win 5 and lose the rest so we might as well start having a crack than doing what we are doing. Right now, our best team IMHO is this;
Begovic
Shotton Shawcross Upson Wilson
Pennant Whelan Palacios Etherington
Jones Walters.

As soon as Higgy gets back, stick him at LB and put Wilson next to Palacios. I know we've got more options now, but for me the side for the Prem still basically picks itself. Little variations here and there aside, I don't think the side should change much from: Begovic Shotton/Wilko Huth Shawcross Higginbotham Pennant Palacios Wilson/Whelan Etherington
And obviously the strikers, but at the moment we simply don't know which combination will work best. We've got three first team strikers in Crouch, Jones and Walters and I have to say I'm really liking the look of Jerome, plus then we also have Ric to come back and I'm looking forward to it far more than I thought I would. Then we have Mama as well but I'm not sure how much he'll play, but it's nice to know we've potentially got three decent enough partnerships in Crouch/Walters, Jones/Jerome and Fuller/Sidibe for the four competitions. The latter partnership should still be good enough for facing Championship and lower opposition in the FA Cup and League Cup. But it still highlights how shit our midfield is in terms of depth, for the life of me I can't get my head around why TP only bought in one midfielder when we could have done with two CMs and a backup winger. Sigh. He knows better than me though, clearly.

In order to get a new attacking midfielder that is good enough in then the club would have to fork out an extra 7-8 million, we just can't afford to be spending so much in one window. I'm pleased that we actually have a new midfielder (Palacios) who is a massive step up to what we had before. Next window we should see a new attacking midfielder, for now I'm pleased with Whelan anyway.

- Attacking Midfielder, Definition (Pulis) - Box to box who can actually get forward a bit and pass efficiently while getting stuck in.
Think Whelan but consistent...
