Going back a few years to my school days before the films were thought of me and a few mates read the books at the same time and discussed each chapter as we read it. Sitting on the school grounds one lunch time avidly reading the next installment, a priest who was visiting our chapel ( it was a catholic school) enquired as to what we were reading. He seemed most interested to hear our views on it and lsitened intently to our replies. He then said that if we were really enjoying the book he may have something of interest to show us ( worrying words from a priest to a schoolboy ! ). The next day we went to the chapel to meet him. In he came carrying a battered old leather suitcase which he opened before us and revealed its contents. Inside were piles of papers with hand drawn pictures of mythical creatures, loads of hand drawn maps of middle-earth with various calculations scrawled about them and an endless stream of notes and scribblings all relating to LOTR. We studied them for a while commenting on the maps and reading bits of the notes and then finally got round to asking him how he got them. It turned out that the priest was Tolkiens son Christopher and he had all of his fathers notes that were drafted before he wrote the book. Looking back, I wished Id have asked to take just one piece of paper from that case. Who would of thought it would go on to be the success it was. Even though I never had anything from it I feel honoured to have held those papers for an hour or so. If you didnt enjoy the book or film, this will mean nothing, but to those that are really into it,well, you can understand how priviledged I was ;D ;D That's an excellent story. Must have been brilliant.

Sure was. Thinking back, Im not sure why he was there. Perhaps he was with a priest at our first meeting as the next day he was in normal clothes, I cant quite recall but I remember those drawings well enough. He did say that his father posted bits of the story to him to ask his advice and some of that stuff was in the case too. I should have seized the opportunity to grab some, Id be a millionaire now !!!

Tolkien spent a great deal of time in Penkhull visiting his son over the years. Father John Tolkien was investigated for abuse sadly though I believe he died before anything could be proven/disproved.

How old were you? I just can't understand why didn't politely ask for some stuff... I would have been 13 or 14 so that would be late 70`s 1980 maybe. Back then the book was pretty much an underground thing. You read it within your own little groups of like minded folk, outside that circle you would be ridiculed for reading about elves and dragons, it wasnt cool. Tolkien wasnt the big name he is now so we werent bothered, it was the story that mattered to us. If it had happened a few years later I certainly would have but at that age I didnt think about it.

Perhaps it was Father John at our school and Christopher was with him. Well done Piggy (you`ll always be Piggy to us )

All three Godfathers are overrated. Being serious now, Toy Story is the greatest trilogy of all time. Name a trilogy where every film is just as good, if not better than the last. There isn't a second of imperfection in any Toy Story film. Tis true what he says..

One of the roads off Hartshill bank is Tolkien Way for that very reason.

I'd love to see some of those original notes.
I have all of J.R.R's lotr based books. I just need Christopher Tolkien's Complete Histories of Middle-earth and can't justify the £130 it'd cost for them all.
PS. I'm listening to the soundtrack from the films right now and it's pretty fucking amazing
Two films that are good alongside the original books are LOTR and Jurassic Park.

LOTR 2 was the first film i went to see with the missus. Hadnt read the books or seen the first one and didnt have a fucking clue what was going on. When LOTR 3 came out i went to see that with her at the cinema as well. Again i still hadnt a clue what was happening, and when it got it about an hour from the end and he has to throw a ring in a volcano or something i just kept thinking hurry up and chuck it in cos i want go home, and did he? Did he fuck! He just kept pissing about and dragged it out and milked it for all its worth!
I dont like like the LOTR trilogy can you tell? The missus loves the films though. Each to their own i suppose.
