I know it's a EEB sort of thread, boring as buggery and all that, but anybody been having problems?
On speed test it's been coming up with 20+ meg most of the time, but my ping is awful, over 50 sometimes. This is happening in none peak times quite a lot, and I can't play on Xbox live because it just lags. Can't even download the update and I think this is why.
Any help or insults are much appreciated from any techno geeks.

I know it's not the worst, but it makes online games unplayable. \i'd ask Virgin directly but they are patronising twats(and probably rightly so considering my lack of computery knowledge).

Well that's it, just me and i don't have a clue how to fix it I don't even know if it's a Virgin problem I'm having or an Xbox problem.

Virgin couldn't give a fuck about gamers. It depends on where you live though really, for a couple of the bigger cities they're actually not too bad.
Jitter is a bad thing by the way. It's only people on VM that get jitter, normally. Unless you pay something like £4 a month for broadband, in which case you'd expect shit internet.

Jitter on the line is interference. Whilst the coaxial cable is insulated it's not complete protection. Turtlebeach wireless headsets pump out a lot of interference for example. Try replacing some wires that you can (such as the ethernet), and try perhaps moving where the modem is away from places with a lot of electrical devices nearby.
If it still persists, ring Virgin and complain like fuck to them.

Virgin have had this jitter/packet loss problem for a couple of years.
Up until then they were one of the best ISP's around.

Right, an update now - took out ethernet from back of xbox, had same problem, pissed about unsuccessfully trying to burn the update onto disc. Tried again normally, it seems to be downloading now, anybody with XBL remember how long this latest upodate took to download.
Just as I was typing this the dowload has stuck again, it's got further than previously though.
Broadband speeds are generally pretty poor where I am (Trent Vale) due to being so far from the exchange, so not much choice but to use Virgin, or I'd probably switch. It's pretty good when it's all running smoothly, but then some days it's just dogshit and pointless playing games or watching streams or films.

Sweet jesus, I've got it!
Maybe it's because I'm the last person online within a 2 mile radius.

I'm not sure what the ping is for but on pingtest I got 25ms but only 4mb download and 2 download on speedtest I got 15ms ping and 37.99mb download and 8.9 upload, which I trust better as i checked the download yesterday evening on another one and I got 31.99mb what a riveting start to the weekend

It's much easier to test your ping by using CMD (on 7/vista just type it in the search box) and then type in ping -t google.co.uk.
Anything over 30ms considering how accessible google is means its not performing all that great but it will do an endless stream of tests until you're done and when you want it to stop just press ctrl + c.

All virgin customers will have a nice letter coming through informing you of an increase, £3.50 PCM on my bundle plus an extra 25p for a paper bill, bthey now charge me £1.75 PCM to tell me how much I owe them, bastards. I complained last night, got me no where
