For many years, there has been an undercurrent of unease in this song. Why was there an old man in the kings garden? Collecting firewood was the explanation, but in the next sentence the kings vassal says the man lives "a good league hence" which is around three miles, but it its also explained that the old man lives "right against the forest fence", i.e. he lives right next to a forest, so why is he in the castle grounds when he has an entire forest next to his house. It just doesnt add up. In my view, he was a thieving gypo looking to steal stuff from the kings shed . So I re-write the hymn a little. Sing along everyone...
“What’s that you’re telling me he lives, Right next to a big forest, Then what’s he doing in my back yard upon his firewood forage? He’s probably on reconnaissance, for the local reavers, Or he is a thieving git, trying to deceive us – us.”
“Rouse the guard and chase him off, with some fearsome dogs, He should be in his own back yard, looking for his logs. Get out there now and give to him, my advice so blunt, He’s either short of a full deck or he’s a stupid c**t”.
“Sire if you give him lots of food, and then he’ll surely like ye” “He’s getting fuck all” said the King, “for he’s thieving pikey”. “Fetch my shotgun and some flares, and not some fucking vittals He shall have his Christmas wares, inside a hospital-al-al”.

A rare example of the cover being better than the original.
