Think the Camber Sands lads were all good swimmers, got caught on a sandbar then tried to swim back against a rip tide. Only going to be one winner there as they said even Adam Peary Olympic gold medalist would not be able to swim against it, just too strong. A lack of lifeguards doesn't help as well.

In a riptide are you supposed to swim away from the shore? So with the current rather than against it

Supposed to swim parallel to the shore I think, until you're out of it.

Got pulled out in a rip tide about 10 years ago in Thailand. One minute I'm in shallow water and the next i'm 30 odd foot away. Luckily a life guard spotted me and was there in under a minute as I was seconds from drowning with all the water i'd swallowed. Scariest fucking experience ever, and it taught me a precious lesson, fuck the sea off and stay on land.

Heard some expert stating that if you're stuck in a rip tide, swim at 90 degrees to the current. The rip tide is caused by banks in the sands and you'll never beat it, but if you swim sideways you're usually only a good few meters from shallow water and no RIP current. Makes no odds to me... A - I can't swim B - I don't go in the sea ( fucking hate sand too)
