So just having a brew and thinking where did it go wrong under Hughes? I think he probably did take us up a level to start with, we were improving year on year. What were the key moments that the wheels came off? Getting rid of Hoot too soon, shipping out Whelan’s SJW?? I think it’s worth a discussion

Losing to Liverpool on penalties in the League Cup seemed to mark a turning point in our fortunes. It was downhill after that. Pure speculation but maybe Hughes instead of praising the players for the massive effort that night instead went ballistic and destroyed the dressing room spirit.
Add some piss poor signings and Hughes playing three at the back or other formations that didn't suit the players we were doomed.
In many games the wrong formation or team selection hampered us more than playing with ten men. In those games we were getting battered until we changed to 4-4-2 or 4-5-1 then it was like watching a different team but often the damage was already done.
There is probably loads of other reasons too....
