I remember when I was in Penkhull Homes about 9 years old and used to bob off school to sneak into the victoria ground to see if anyone was training. One day I was about to sneak in when two great shadows fell over me. I turned around just as Gordon Banks ruffled my hair and said "get in before the gaffer sees you" ... I think the other player was John Ritchie.. Never forgot that moment. Gordon Banks was, along with Muhammid Ali, my lifelong hero, a giant of a man in the truest sense. Rest in peace Banksie. Stoke on Trent will never forget your greatness.

I'm stunned he was 6ft 1, he looked so much shorter, as a 5ft 9 keeper he gave me hope, if I'd have known he was 6.1 I'd have taken up darts
