It says something for the state of some clubs’ finances, and the money being thrown about by others, that Mikel Arteta has taken a £20,000-a-week pay cut to move from Everton to Arsenal while his now former team-mate Jermaine Beckford is rewarded with a £15,000-a-week rise to move to Championship side Leicester City.

Beckford, who is being paid an eye-popping £40,000 a week, cost an initial £3 million as well and, having rebuffed the overtures of other clubs during the summer — he recently got married and his wife did not want to leave Merseyside — he was simply given an offer he could not refuse.

He also became Leicester’s 12th signing of the summer at a cost that has, despite the wealth of the club’s new Thai owners, raised eyebrows throughout the division.

Makes you sick to see that money being thrown around. Was out running this morning with a Newcastle fan and we passed some big houses (couple of million types) down some leafy lane, he said 'that's probably owned by Blackpools reserve left back' and when you think about it, it's probably true, if somebody like Sonko can earn a million a year, it's shiite

Difficult club to like Leicester. Went bust first time around owing as little as 4 grand to St Johns Ambulance, which they never got.

Now they've offloaded their debts through administration they seem to be back to throwing cash around again.

Smacks of playing the system and I hope they don't go up as a result.
