No way we can make 4th this season, fantasy land with our squad, unless we spend big again in January

I live in a land inhabited by fans of ManU, ManC, Liverpool, Everton, Birmingham, Arsenal and the occasional Crewe fan. I no longer hear many of the old gripes about Stoke and the new signings have only served to increase the volume of the compliments. See my thread about Newcastle and Sunderland fans a week or so back.
I'm sitting down this morning with a Wolves fan, if he says anything nice about us I'll need smelling salts ;D

From the mouth of a Wolves fan who bears loads of Stokie grudges: " I suspect that Stoke are on the cusp of something, I remember the days of Ritchie, Greenoff........." No negativity

No negativity Being a Stokie I have to say, remember how nervily low we were in the table for all but a couple of the Ritchie/Greenhoff years... If a couple of upper-mid teams don't perform to their potential we're in with a chance of about 7th and I'd be chuffed as hell with that.

I don't look up the table. I still look down.
7th? I'd still be happy with 17th. I really cannot believe the job that he has done, even if on occassions he has you pulling your hair out. I'm sure even United fans feel like that about Fergie from time to time.
We're just getting a bit better, every year. Amazing, really.

Do you think the long term goal for the club is to be a regular feature in winning domestic trophies and a regular face in the Europa league as well are an established top 6 six side?
Do you think that Coates and Pulis have really got an underlying agenda of realistically sneaking a 4th spot in the prem and seeing the club evolve into a mega club.
The latter of my thoughts I just can't see and that is going on the comments made Coatesy's about spending big in the future.

I'd like the southstand to be married with the family stand soon to start increasing the possible attendance. I think that with the squad we have barring any absolute shocking injuries should maintain us for the next four or so years, with the odd good aquisition. The team i cannot make my mind up on is Wolves. They are embarking on this expansive rebuilding project to take the capacity to the high 30,000's yet their squad is ostensibly the one that was going down with 10 minutes to go of last season, with Roger Johnson. I would have waited a while longer if i were them, but i do think that Stoke could now realitically redesign the corners so that we had 30,000 seats available. And given that at the end of Pulis' first stint, we were struggling to get 11,000 is a remarkable turnaround.

I suspect that Coates is just about as shrewd an operator as there is out there. Both him and Pulis keep up the mantra that the spending will have to stop and the, hey, another £22 million. No-one expected Stoke to spend another £22 million with some left eating their ballsacks . Added to the fact that they're also both willing to go down to the wire to get the best deal Sounds increasingly like part of a good strategy for a good business model.

I think Coates is waiting for the bubble to burst for the 'elite' clubs (proposed wage caps/financial rulings etc, either from UEFA or the FA making things fairer). In the mean time, he's building the club up to a level where it can compete should the monopoly of the sky four, or six, or whatever, be smashed. It's a great bit of philanthropy on his part, but to be completely successful the Premeir league has to become more competitive sooner rather than later. If not, then the best we can hope for is to be like Villa or Everton.

And given that at the end of Pulis' first stint, we were struggling to get 11,000 is a remarkable turnaround. Totally agree with the moving forward thing VP but how far forward in terms of the football can we move or more so willing to move? The increasing expenditure for the likes of Man City, Liverpool Utd and now even QPR will have some major Prem clubs sweating due to the fact that investment at the moment is going to absorb millions to keep up. We have set our marker to other clubs by spending big in the transfer window but to continue to move forward as a commercially viable business will take massive strides in terms of corporate functionality on match days expanding the club in a wider pool of merchandising and increasing the clubs fanbase to allow the match day attendance to provide a nice chunk of revenue flow. In the current world of the prem we are going to hit a peak where we cannot move any further forward because we will be competeing with teams who's spend culture is far superior to ours. What is amazing is that TP has slowly begun to give this great club a credabiltity amongst the neutral and other clubs supporters of the wider football world. No one laughs at little old Stoke and their woes anymore we get talked about being a test for any team that comes to the Brit and that is wonderful to hear from the pundits and Journalists alike Up the Pottters
