Didn't he play Arismendi at right back against Besiktas? That could explain it. Delap has played full back too but neither he nor Arismendi are internationals in that position.. Ah fuck it, who knows what Tones thinking... ;D

Ok, blinding positivity for positivity's sake here: Firstly, Wilson and Etherington are carrying injuries. I've no problem with them being left at home. Whelan, Shawcross and Whitehead I have more of a problem with. Leaving your captain behind smacks of a write-off. However, we've all identified problems with TP's first choice line up. A lack of mobility up front, for one. Walters and Crouch not gelling. No real midfield combination working. Not playing both wingers together. A team we could put out with that squad could actually solve most of those problems. Fuller and Jerome have the pace to get behind the Valencia back line. Delap and Palacios...that might work. Delap has been a better partner for Palacios than Whelan or Whitehead and Palacios has had a week to rest and get over his shocker against Valencia last week. Jones is more mobile up front. You could argue that a team with Jones and Fuller up front with Pennant on the wing might beat a team made up of the players who've stayed at home. That's not the way TP sees it, as we all know, but we may have flukeily given ourselves a better chance of winning. The defence will, however, be pretty dire. 4 international across the back, so don't be surprised to see Woodgate at full-back, with Shotton on the right wing and Pennant on the left. If I were a betting man, I would go for the following line-up: Begovic
Woodgate Huth Diao Collinsinho
Shotton Palacios Delap Pennant
Jones
Jerome I'd prefer Fuller up front and I've seen it theorised that TP's quotes hint at that. I think Jerome is more likely though. In short, half a chance of getting a goal, high chance of conceding over 9000.

I'm pretty sure that I read somewhere that Ryan was injured (which would explain why he was left behind), but it might've just been some random on twitter.

Few people are suggesting he picked up a groin injury against Crawley.

Even if Ryan, Matty, Crouch and Walters especially, aren't injured now, they would have been very soon without this break.
I suppose it isn't the worst time to rest them. Ethers, Walters and Crouch didn't really cause Valencia any problems, and Woodgate has experience of Spanish football, so should be able to step in for Shawcross.

In fairness it's probably a game that's more suited to Woodgate's style anyway with the slick passing in behind as we're pushing forward as opposed to the usual deep in the box defending we do.

Is Woodgate eligible to play, I thought he was omitted from the European squad?

Is Woodgate eligible to play, I thought he was omitted from the European squad? Purely from my Football Manager experience, I think you're allowed to make up to 3 changes in the squad for each stage, hence why Collins and Woodgate can play.

It's been better over there since the Crawley game. Last night it went into semi-meltdown again. I'm trying to keep myself away from it. It's bad for blood pressure.
There's one post on there that says that if we don't win against Swansea, there will be 'loud calls for Pulis to be dismissed coming from the stands'. Brilliant, we'll be a national laughing stuck and have the media beating our fanbase around the head with a dirty great stick about how stupid we are. Apparently it will make Peter Coates sack him. I think it's far more likely to make him say "Bollocks to this load of ingrates, I'm fucking off", before selling us to the first Sudanese drug barons, Russian arms dealers or Sri Lankan pig merchants who make a big for the club.
