You can pick up the console a game and a small memory card for about 180 quid on ebay. Got mine (just the vita) for 159 quid unopened and delivered. I know it's not cheap but I had some spare cash and felt a bargain seen as it's 200-220 new.

Only managed to have a dick about with the menus and that but it's a proper sexy bit of kit. Probably wise holding off as there might be a price drop coming in the next 6 months like the 3DS as it's not selling well at all even in Japan, even the fucking PSP out sold it one week. But on the other hand I can't see Sony budging on price just yet.

They do need more mobile like apps as well to make it more versatile. Sony say they're concentrating on the PS3 and the Vita for the next few years so functionality should get better and better.

Had a 3d tv since November. It is pretty amazing and does add a lot to the experience when done properly, but it's not essential. Haven't used it at all the last few months, mainly due to lack of content and haven't played Uncharted and AC for ages.
