for Cole and Woodgate... Stoke are aiming to tie up the double signing of Carlton Cole and Jonathan Woodgate. The Potters were hoping to complete a £16million deal for Birmingham pair Cameron Jerome and Scott Dann, but now appear to be looking elsewhere to fill the vacancies in their striking and defensive departments. And talkSPORT understands they are currently in talks with West Ham and England centre-forward Cole, as well as Spurs centre-half Woodgate. Cole is likely to be available for around £6million following the Hammers’ relegation to the Championship, while Stoke are also discussing a pay-as-you-play deal for Woodgate, who is available on a free transfer from White Hart Lane. www.talksport.co.uk/sports-news/football/premier-league/transfer-rumours/8869/0/stoke-look-complete-double-deal-cole-and-woodgateNot exactly a shock but it seems to be getting closer...

Cole for £6mill isn't too shabby and a fully fit Woodgate would be an absolutely awesome addition
However, he hasn't been fully fit for about 24 years

I'd absolutely love Woodgate to sign, when fit he's superb. He played for Real Madrid for fuck's sake! (Although look at the last player we signed who played for a top Spanish side).
I've expressed my disappointment at times regarding CC but now I genuinely would be happy to see him in a Stoke shirt next season, although where he'd be in the pecking order with Jerome, KJ, Fuller and Walters to get past I do not know.
Wouldn't go over 6 million for him though.

If Woodgate could play 20 games in a season I'd be happy.
Can he though?

Carlton Cole for six million might become a decent signing for Stoke, sure he doesn't always look the most graceful player in the world but he's had a few decent performances for England (and a few shit ones too but so have Bent, Rooney and Crouch).
Pulis appears to be very decent at managing injury prone players and Woodgate for free on a pay as you play type deal isn't a massive risk.

I read today that Woodgate had turned down a pay as you play deal to stay at Spurs so he must be looking for an actual contract..?

Cant see anyone giving him a contract with his track record unless its a really minimal one with add ons based on appearances

I thought that hopefully he just feels that even if he's fit, he wouldn't get a game at Spurs, so would never get paid, but he would get a game for us. Or maybe he doesn't care about the money at this stage of his career and just wants to get as many games as he can.

We might as well sign Neil Franklin if we're thinking about Woodgate.

I think on his day there is no better English centre half in the country but like You say his day rarely comes. Utterly pointless.

I'd be wincing every time Woodgate went anywhere near an opposition player in case he brushed the players shoulder, shattering his own spine in the process.
Same as picking up that Hargreaves fella, brilliant on his day but it'd be like a ticking time-bomb. I'd probably pick them both up on a pay-as-you-play deal mind.

2200: FOOTBALL - Leicester City are being linked with former Manchester United and England midfielder Owen Hargreaves. Boss Sven-Goran Eriksson told BBC Radio Leicester: "I would take him at once if he's fit. He's a great - he was at least - a great, great football player."

Given the World Cup 2006 connections that is potentially a likely signing. Hargreaves (considering his unfortunate luck with injuries) will probably want lower league football to give himself an easier ride.

My word. Johnathon fucking Woodgate? . Isn't he dead? If we are prepared to take a (massive) risk on him, shouldn't we done the same with Ba? I'll never question Tone's judgement after he's made me look stupid on more than one occasion but it does make me wonder at times. I'd take Cole at that price given the fucking ridiculous prices of this window and if it seals Mama's departure from the squad then I'm all for it. We desperately need to bolster the squad and although we've done fantastically well with the squad we've got, I fear we will slowly drop league positions considering the signings some teams are making. I don't know whether it's just concern because Sunderland are signing every fucker with a pulse and we've yet to make one. 28 signings don't make a decent squad as we've proved, but it doesn't stop you from worrying. Especially with Europa if we should progress.

Can't see it myself, unless he really can't find a Prem club.

where he'd be in the pecking order with Jerome, KJ, Fuller and Walters to get past I do not know Jerome: Not signed. Ric: Injured, not sure if he'll come back anywhere near as good as he was. KJ; Hibernates over winter. Walters: Can't do it all on his own. Mama: Is just Mama (plus he's injured.)
