So after 6 faithful years, I think the old girl has popped it.
It turned off just before I loaded the Dead Space 3 demo, 3 beeps and now there's a red flashing light.
Is it beyond salvageable?

Gone! Sounds like what happened to me. Will it turn on now or does it just turn off again after about 2 seconds? If it is that, it will cost you about £60-90! But with new consoles supposedly coming out later this year, is it worth it. You could box it up and flog it on Ebay for about £30 for parts! If you can be arsed with the fuss. Also, can you get the disk out?

Yeah it turns on for 2 seconds, the horrible yellow light (I can feel the grim reaper breathing behind it) comes on very briefly then 3 beeps and turns off with a red flashing light.
Managed get the disk out by turning off the electric, turning back on and holding the eject button, the fan went crazy then it ejected.

Question then, I put a 300g hard drive in it (originally 40g). Is all my stuff lost now? If it won't switch on it won't back up?
Been reading about the 'hairdryer trick'. Sounds like that may work but if I can just take the hard drive out, NEA.

You can take the hd out and plug it into your pc/laptop with a special cable I believe with it being 2.5" drive it only needs 5 volts so there should be a usb powered one, cba to check!
It'll be USB to SATA/IDE or something like that.

Bummer
"It would in the way that the computer would see the drive, but the data is encrypted so you won't be able to copy anything anyway."

Ahhh balls, didn't realise the files on PS3 are encrypted, you can't even take the drive out and put it in a new ps3 because it reformats when you start the system up again Looks like you need to get it back up and running temporarlily and then transfer all files to an external drive. painintheminge.com

I've only gone and fixed it. Only most the plastic has melted and misshaped at the back ;D. It won't last but all my saves are now in the cloud.

So, you've fixed it knowing it'll die anytime soon?
I wouldn't call that "fixed" ;D

It's a fucking result though. The saves I was bothered about the most was Skyrim - about 56 hours, Mass Effect 2 - 60 odd hours, Mass Effect 3 - 40 hours, Far Cry 3 15 hours, Mass Effect - 10 hours in, Assassins Creed 3 - about 6 hours in.
Ordered a slim so it'll be all ready to be transferred.
