I understand full well why people call him a thug etc, but today's incident was absolutely nothing. Simply because of who he is and what his past is, it's turned from being a bit of handbags that would normally get ten seconds worth of discussion on MOTD into a national public outrage. The fact is that in three seasons he's only been suspended once (for that push on Elmander), that's a very good disciplinary record for someone who supposedly has no self control. For the brawling, I've been in fights before as I'm sure a large proportion of adult males have. For twatting that Man City player, so what? I've hit people before as well, it doesn't make me a horrible person, it just means I'm liable to react when wound up. I refuse to believe he hit him in the face for no reason... And besides, Fuller twatted Griff too if you remember! The cigar in the eye is the one that sounds worst, but let's not forget that the youth player had been baiting him all evening, Barton was pissed, and the youth player was trying to set fire to his shirt... But that all gets forgotten, doesn't it? In one stupid moment of reaction he turned around and reacted and I'm sure he instantly regretted it and still does. The exact same thing that happened today happened last season in a ManU vs Lpool fixture. I can't remember whether it was at Old Trafford or Anfield, but Torres dived ridiculously and Ferdinand reacted exactly how Barton did today, and nobody gave a shit. Think the last bit is worth mentioning. Torres dive, Ferdinand grabbed him round the neck and picked him up. It's only because it's Barton that it's spun out of control like this. If Barton had stamped on Song, you would of had everyone wanting him banned for life. The major, major point being he's miles better than any of our center mids. Major upgrade on Whelan.

You can't condone violence with the fact that you've been violent in the past. Today has been blown out of proportion but like Savage said on ESPN, "It was a rubbish game and nothing else happened".
He's not the player I'd want representing our club at all, although Huth and others can be physical I'm still proud to see them wearing the shirt and the same can't be said for Barton.
And he's not even that good a player, if Whelan is 6/10 Barton is 7/10 maybe 8 on his day. For £55/60 a week we could do so much better.

I'm not trying to condone it at all, it's stupid and it never achieves anything within a society; however, he's portrayed by some to be the Anti-Christ, when he's not, he's just a bloke with anger management problems who's also had drink problems. Those two things are very unfortunate, but combined can be hell, for everyone around him as well as himself. He's kicked the drink and seems to be trying to find a way to combat the red mist, it might not be 100% effective 100% of the time but I don't believe in the slightest that he enjoys beating people up, or that he relishes being called a piece of shit by half of the nation's football supporting populace.
I'm sure if he could find a proper way of managing his problems that would let him sort himself out and let him get on with playing football and earning his money with no other problems, he'd snap it up. I'm not saying that committing his future to Stoke and the miracle-man-manager Pulis would be guaranteed to let him do this, but there are far worse options out there for him.
I'm not saying we should sign him to sort him out, I'm saying we should sign him because he's a class player. And he is not over-rated as some people on the OC have been saying, if anything he's underrated because he should be playing for a top six side and should be an England regular, but he's neither... And if he didn't have some baggage we wouldn't stand a chance of even being mentioned in the same breath as him, and the signing of those types of players are how we've built our club up from Championship shite to being a club touted by some in the press for a top-eight Prem spot.

I was beginning to get used to the idea of Barton becoming a Stoke player, today has reminded me what a cunt he really is.

I still bet you'd prefer him alongside Palacios than Whelan or Delap... And If you wouldn't I can't see how it would be from a footballing perspective, so the implication would be that you'd be willing to let the potential success of the club diminish for the sake of a petty grievance over his character? I trust Pulis, if he thinks he's too much of a cock then fair enough, I'm sure he's spoken to him before and knows him a load better than I do... If he thinks he can handle him I'll be ecstatic because he'll have just bought the best player the club has seen in my lifetime so far.

I know your a big fan boother, but I genuinely think he'd do awful damage to team spirit. I could see a large number of the team not getting on with him, starting with Ricardo.

Remember when Salif made a clean tackle, beat the defender and then made a simple 5 yard pass? Me neither.

I'm not sure team spirit is all it's cracked up to be for us these days. It certainly was when we came up. I look at that squad and I'm actually amazed that we got promoted with half the players in it, never mind defying relegation and finishing midtable! Now though when we're trying to push on and (hopefully) take the place of Everton and Villa as that club just outside the top six, we'll inevitably have to be bringing on players with proper talent rather than those who can get by with just incredible fitness and work ethic. With that though, comes ego. It's when the egos clash that's the problem though, and I completely get what you mean with him vs Ricardo. In reality though, if we signed Barton and an unhealable fight happened between them... There's only going to be one winner. Ricky's nearly 32 (which for a striker whose pace is a vital asset not just to him as a player but the team as a whole), we saw his pace was going a little bit and we saw he demoted to super-sub (either through poor form or fitness or a bust-up) even before he was injured. He will still be immense for us in the near future when he gets fit again, but the reality is that he's only going to get worse. Barton on the other hand is 28 (nearly 29) and in his utter prime as a combative midfielder. In fact, he might even get a little bit better before he starts to get old. For the wages we'd pay him (inc signing on fee if we're following the Jones template) he'd simply have to play. He'd fit with us like a glove, and he's just a fucking class above anything we have in CM. In fact, I'd even go as far as to say our midfielders are barely passable as a top-half Championship set... And for a player of the calibre of Barton (who if not for past indescretions, as I say, would be at a top-six club) would bring us on leaps and bounds. ESPECIALLY if we got Palacios or Parker (I know Palacios would complement Barton better but I like the idea of having the novelty of an all-English midfield, all of whom should be playing for England). If we got Palacios too we'd have, in my eyes, the best all-round, most balanced, and best value for money midfield in the whole Prem. Add to that the best CB pairing outside Manu and Chelsea, a fucking ace up-and-coming keeper in Begovic, and we're two fullbacks and two strikers away from winning the fucking title.

Annoyingly brilliant post you wanker. ;D And I love the idea of an all English midfield, but Parker will never come here I feel and I realise we have to move away from relying on the whole team spirit thing but not as aggressively (for want of a better word) and quicly as simply bringing in an ego like Barton and blowing the dressing room out of the water.
We need to push on in CM, 100%, I don't even know how we've gotten this far with the CM's we've got, however, I think there are other options out there than Barton.

In any other walk of life if someone hits you on the face like Gervinho did, you could tell the Police and they would be arrested for battery no matter how hard or soft the blow was. Assault, many moons ago I worked as a parking attendant in central london, and a truck driver got as far as pushing me in the chest for giving him a ticket, he was unloading in a no loading/unloading zone, as he was with the vehicle I gave him the option of moving, he didn't so I issued the ticket. He went apeshit, pushed me in the chest, trying to cajole a response from me. And was then stupid enough to stick around when the police turned up. If a driver does that you just call a code red over the radio, and the office calls the Police, he had previous so they knicked him for Assault. daft sod should have just moved his truck

When fif Barton turn into this world class player by the way? I saw him make a few assists last season and not much else, did I miss all the episodes of Match of the day where he was Iniesta with a tag?

I saw him make a few assists last season and not much else, did I miss all the episodes of Match of the day where he was Iniesta with a tag? I think you need to take your 'anti-Barton' glasses off, he was excellent last season whenever I saw him. Even yesterday I thought he was pulling all of the strings in the middle for Newcastle, always available, always coming for the ball doing the simple things very well like good playmakers do. Reminiscent of a Jimmy Bullard in his prime. If some of you don't want Barton because you think his temper is a liability and think we could be playing a lot of games with 10 men because of his poor decision making then I'd say that is a valid argument against us signing Barton (I'd disagree with it myself because his disciplinary record is absolutely fine) but it seems that some of you don't want Barton because he's a naughty boy and you only want angels like Huth representing our club... which is dead gay. Sort your lives out. He's head and shoulders above any of our midfield or anyone we've been linked with.

Remember when Salif made a clean tackle, beat the defender and then made a simple 5 yard pass? Me neither. Our 2nd season, Diao was immense away from home. Most noticeably in his man of the match performance in our away win at Spurs. Not one Tottenham player got anywhere near him without having the ball taken off them... which to be honest I've always thought Diao was brilliant at. He's easily the best defensive midfielder I've ever seen in a Stoke shirt, it's a pity that his passing is a bit wayward at times otherwise he would have been world class in his prime. Diao appreciation society member #1.

Palacios and Parker are both better than Barton. Not saying he's a bad player but just like there's 'anti-Barton' glasses there are 'pro-Barton' glasses with him getting arse licked for being as good as a Premier League player should be. He's better than anything we have in the middle atm, but we easily have the worst centre-mids in the league so it isn't saying much. I think the appeal of Barton with some people is that he'd fit the 'us against them' mentality that the club seems to have.
Fuck Barton, and fuck you.

I certainly don't buy into the "he'd fit the 'us against them' mentality" argument, I'd much prefer a Joey Barton without that side to his game at all... but he'd be playing for Man Utd or Chelsea. Teams like Stoke wouldn't get anywhere near a Joey Barton without his off the field problems, with them though we could get ourselves a very classy player indeed.
I'd put him on the same level as Parker, maybe slightly less heart but a tad more technical ability... He's in a completely different category to Palacios.
Barton/Parker/Bullard (in his prime) and Palacios in the middle = my wet dream.
