50% readiness is all that is needed for the best endings. The online aspect is for people who can't be arsed with the single player and want to boost their way through it with the online play.
There is more endings, initally there were only 3 very vague endings, it swells up to about 13 or 14 different outcome stories. There can be some very grim endings if you go into it unprepared, Mass Effect 2 had the same and they can be incredibly well told.
I was initially disappointed with how the game ended, but Leviathan brought some of the final pieces of information as to where the reapers came from and such.
The extended cut endings are better for providing more detail as to what happens after you make your decision. It does a nice job of it I think.

Apparently Leviathan is the only one worth playing so far, but I trust you're not going to be paying for them somehow ;D.
2's last mission shocked the fuck out of me, I thought I'd done everything I could for it, then blamo; half the fucking squad died.
I found 3 quite tough going about a quarter-half way through and left it a few months, but it's well worth it. The acting is superb.

I only got Jack killed, kept putting Mordin the annoying queer into all the dangerous situations but he kept getting the job done ;D
I don't know whether to install the new endings either, kind of want to see what all the fuss was about.

Mordin's fucking ace ;D. I'd just go with the new endings, if there's 14 odd variations of the endings, then the previous are quite black and white in comparison. Save yourself a bitter ending, it was a shite way to bow out of what has probably been the best franchise this gen.

The fuss was that the endings weren't up to what you'd have expected after arguably giving up at least 90 hours of your time to something. The game ended but you didn't really know what had happened, what your choices had all led to. It's not any extra playability, just further cutscenes, more voice acting and the games cinematic story telling but it makes it all right.

Yup. Caved in. The first is fucking great so far. Nice after having smaller objectives after the full scale war in 3.

Quite like this low EMS ending, Mass Effect has been one of the few games that can let you complete a game without 'winning' and I think its something that makes it a lot better.

How do some humans live and some die in that one? The one on my ending SPOILER
wiped out all sentient life, forgetting it'd wipe out the Geth too *sad face*.

One of the original endings was that all life on Earth was wiped out, as well as in the sol system, in the extended cut they revised that to make it like it is there where you see the ship effectively stranded in space meaning you know that all those in space will die.
Personally though I went for the full EMS, paragon control option, it was a strange ending to a game that much is for certain.
