OK the obvious one is Sir Stanley Mathews, but lets be a little bit more left field
Keith Scott:
His sale/swap with Mike Sheron to Norwich brought to us (Sheron) a player who propelled us into the '96 Play off semi's, and whos sale for £2.5M helped finance our then new home.... for this Keith Scott we salute you, thank you for being so shit ;D

Lee Hendrie. His signing signalled the fact that very good players were being sought by Stoke and also that they were prepared to come to Stoke. It also shut the stupid fans up, only the really, really stupid ones continued to moan

From our first prem season I nominate two players No doubt a lot of stokies would disagree but throughout the first half of the season especially Andy Griffin was immense for me. No longer the quickest player on the pitch but he marshalled our back line really well. Whilst Shawcross and co were often like rabbits in the headlights he talked them through, kept them in their positions and through that we picked up some very valuable points. The second is James Beattie. Arriving mid season, his composure and coolness in front of goal coupled with his infectious running bagged us a few goals that ensured our premier survival. Neither of these will go down in Stoke City folklore but for me these two players helped us massively to establish ourselves and to get us where we are today, entering our fourth prem season and embarking on European football.

Lately, some brilliant short-termers who've given us that crucial season or few months even - Abdy's the greatest of those for me but look how important Mark Crossley was.
I wouldn't put Hendrie on the list because once it came to the business end of the season he wasn't a lot of use.

Crossley is a very good one, as is Akinbiyi, both played vital roles in keeping us up that year.
Then there's the obvious Mathews, Franklin, Steele etc.

Arsene Wenger.
United the whole club, and gave us the attitude that we don't care what anyone thinks of us.

Peter Fox. Put in a right shift for us, but underated by outsiders. Our all time lowest league position could of been a bit lower if it wasn't for him

Salif Diao - Jesus Christ on a stick, he was immense in his first spell and was part of the loanee lot of Hendrie, Griffin and Berger that signalled change was afoot, actual ambition being shown
Also highly respected by the players and backroom staff, an Ambassador for the club and he loves Stoke City
Bit shit now though..

People often forget Cresswell's 13 (?) goals from the left wing in promotion season.

what the fucks your problem I don't have one, but you seem to why, just because I answered the thread title to how I see it, what's the problem with that?. We all love this football club, and those players did IMO that's how I see the club shaped, not by a few mercenaries who came for a few extra quid

the first line of my post does state "left field choices" though and Stein and Thorne would count as "mercenaries" to be honest, they may not have come for a few extra quid, but they certainly left for it, Steino had been moaning that he was still only on £400 a week, same as when he joined the club.
As for Thorne, I've heard from an ex Oatcake poster who knew him and Kav, that they both wanted to go, but played very different "games" in that respect, such that 99% of people see Kav as the mercenary, and not Thorne

Trying avoid the obvious ones like Sir Stan, Steino, Sheron, etc. I go for Danny Higgs. Signed him for £225k and sold him to Sunderland for £2.5m allowing us to fund the wages for the loan players that pushed us to promotion to the promised land then signed him back once we'd achieved it and has been a great servant since, including THAT freekick
