Ok gents, I need advice.... (sensible ) Having finally seen the rhuematologists I've been officially diagnosed with Ehlers Danlos Type III which is basically a more severe form of hypermobility. I've been told to improve my muscle strength above my knees to offer more support and to improve my posture. Other half has bought me an exercise horse, which after my initial hysterical laughter I find does actually seem to work. It makes me sit up straight and because I'm having to use my thighs to hold myself steady I can feel my thigh muscles aching. I need some quick exercises I can do which will strengthen my thighs, shoulders and weirdly my fingers. If I can improve the muscles in my hand I can hopefully stop my fingers dislocating. Any ideas? (oh and yes, the horse does look perverse!!) ;D Think we need to start with pictures first Jane

It works though, never realised horse riding was such a workout.

(oh and yes, the horse does look perverse!!) ;D try pilates, it strengths the core muscles one good easy one (not Mrs Orbs) is to stand against the wall and slowly slide the back down the wall until you are in the sitting position, and hold for as long as possible, and then relax and try again. and get a football, not fully inflated, lie on your back with feet on the floor, and bring the knees off the ground and squeeze the ball with the knees, try different levels of height of the knees and then try to take the feet off the floor

;D ;D ;D Who's in the middle? Fiona She's a big Stoke fan from Whitchurch, I met her at London Marathon last year, she was on the front pages of the papers after we beat Bolton 5-0, in Wembley in her running gear still (she missed the first 10 mins) and ended up getting invited to watch the cup final in Virgins private box .....

sounds good, cheers northy. Anything that actually impacts on my joints (running, cycling etc) causes more pain so they sound like good, low impact ways of improving the muscle tone.
Will add them to my riding routine ;D

Will add them to my riding routine ;D I know quite a few people with EDS and other things, and one of them especially is really into her exercise, it's helped her massively over the years. She swims a lot, it's perfect really, doesn't impact the joints and really strenthens the muscles. She also does water aerobics which she really recommends and has one of these. Which might look a bit mad, but she loves. Pilates is excellent as well, did a lot of it with my physio and my friend goes to classes which she finds really helpful. It's excellent for building up your muscles around the joints. Northy's exercise is another one recommended by another EDSer. She also uses exercise DVDs for people with arthritis. They're really short, easy programmes which are obviously all really easy on the joints. The last things are exercise bands and leg/arm weights, which I've used loads too, and they're really good. Damned hard work though. Hope some of that is useful!

Thanks hun, some interesting info in that. I'd been told to go swimming but I'm not a very strong swimmer at all, in fact I'm quite nervous in water so if I can do other things instead I'd rather keep that as a last resort. I've got some weights which I use on the horse. I do 2 x 15 minute stints on it a day with weights on my ankles and wrists. Does seem to have improved my cracking a little in a week so I'm hopeful. May try a little Yoga on Wii Fit and have a look for a Pilates DVD. Problem I have at the moment is the pain is worse because I'm exercising. Got to get through that though

I'm sure it will do the trick and we will bring our own lemon curd.

Crewe Park has to many inclines and too many sharp turns for a really fast time.

The last one is on the day I get back from holiday so that's going to be tough. I've managed to persuade my lad to do the July one ;D
