The only thing keeping us going has been the decent home form, if we start losing to teams like West Ham at home we may as well just give up.

The only thing holding Stoke City back from being a decent team is Tony Pulis and his small club mentality. To quote the great Boromir

But who realistically would replace TP if he were to go?

But who realistically would replace TP if he were to go? Well, we'd have a chance of getting any manager in world football who wants to work in the Premier League outside of the elite clubs.

2 names I'd like us have, but not obvious choices are Steve Bould & Gary Neville.
Steve Bould - Stoke lad, Stoke fan, has vasts of experiences with young players & no matter how much we dislike Wenger he's learned under a very clever manager. Exactly what Coates is aiming for.
Gary Neville - Need I say anything? Knows the game inside & out, respects both skill & attitude (as do we fans) & another good fit for the club.

Martinez, Wigan are run very much like us, he didn't want to go to liverpool/Villa due to no board stability

Martinez would be a big risk, Bould is a good shout too. Not sure about Neville, I'd miss him on Sky ;D

He does his best a Wigan with what he has to work with, with the players and money he would have available surely he would be able to turn us into a better side? Never thought about Bould, also a good shout

I'd shit the bed with a gleeful smile if Neville became manager here.

Only thing that makes me think Bould wouldn't come is that he's Wenger's replacement.
Also fuck Sky*
*Can you tell I don't have the SkySports package? ;D

Never thought about Bould, also a good shout He's a manager that is capable of producing excellent football, but finds himself in a relegation battle every season. Maybe at a better club and with more money he could improve the football, bring in some exciting foreign players and turn us back into a team that actually tries to attack and win games, or maybe relegation battle is his level and we'd find ourselves needing a result on the last day to stay up. It'd be a risk, but maybe it'd be one worth taking.

II'll still take 17th or better every season, no matter what. Chances are without TP we wouldn't achieve that and the reality is there would be very few managers of a high enough calibre to keep us in the top teir who would actually be interested in managing us should we be in the market for a new manager. This kind of thinking honestly amazes me. I could buy the 'Only somebody like Pulis could keep this team up' argument when it was Cresswell, Pericard, Dicko, Diao, Mama (god bless him) etc... but Begovic, Huth, Shawcross, N'Zonzi, Kenwyne, Crouch....? They are all very capable Premier League players who would do well at almost any club. And what makes us so unattractive that hardly any managers would be interested in the job? The multimillionaire chairman? The top class training facilities? The chance to play in front of a packed stadium every home game, and take a loyal army of fans to every away game? You're spot on Banj but you've missed my point a bit. I'm not saying 'only someone like Pulis' can keep us up. I'm merely saying I don't really think we would attract the right kind of manager to do just that if he went. Everton are the prime example for me. Longest period in the top flight and mega stable. Despite the fact that they're skint, shit ground, shit facilities etc. Yes we have a 'multimillionaire chairman' and 'top class training facilities' and play in a 'packed out stadium every home game' but we're a long way from being as attractive as a club like that just because that's the way it is (although I accept we're currently a more attractive prospect than villa). Taking a punt on Neville would be ace because I really rate his opinions but what would really happen. I think the point I'm trying to make is that whilst the footy might be dreadful at times, and a significant portion of the media fucking hate us and make things seem worse than they are, from the outside (to the more level headed football people) we're newcomers to this top flight thingy and those who don't have any agenda really can not understand why we would ever want TP out, especially when considering the footballing world and how long some teams spend away from the big time when it all goes wrong.

I'm still properly pissed off at Pulis' comments.
If he's got any sense at all, he'll resign at the end of the season instead of ruining everything he's done thus far.
Bould and Neville both good shouts, would be very happy with Ray Wilkins too.
