I would lay in some extra tinned stuff , lots of bleach, a couple of water butts and stuff like heavy duty polythene, rubber gloves, goggles, masks etc, ifs sure everything will be ok, but in 2 western countries now, healthcare providers have got Ebola and that is what alarms me

It's nopt an outbreak by any stretch in developed countries by any stretch, they literally are isolated cases. The wirld should have acted faster and harder during the initial outbreak to eradicate it like they did in the late 60s but that's by the by. My confidence comes from the west / UK better infrastructure, comms, medical facilities & staff, education of the masses, hygienic cultural & religious beliefs... I fucking hope! What scares me most is freedom of movement but if shit hits the fan we are an island state which should serve us well. If it gets as bad that the average man needs all of the above I' may well end it all well before then, what would be worth surviving for? Saying that I may try to live off the land somewhere?

Fuck me that's some faith you have, we live in a filthy fucking country, populated by morons and managed to fuck up our own hospitals not keeping them clean. I'm off up the Lakes somewhere out of the way.

The problem is how is this spreading? Its comforting to believe that ignorant blackies are getting it in west Africa because they insist on cuddling their dead bodies and they have no healthcare, but if you an asymptomatic carrier coughs onto the handle of a door and you then touch the door and rub your eye, then that's an entirely different matter.
someone might well have "taken a short cut somewhere" but think about it. You are a nurse treating an ebola victim, are you going to be inclined to take any short cuts? The other thing is that the authorities keep on with the mantra that ebola is "quite a difficult virus to catch", again, I'm not so sure. The west African strain we are seeing at the moment is a different one to the zaire strain that we are most familiar with. At least one non-lethan strain of ebola, Reston, was known to have transmitted itself via some aerial route as yet unknown to infect monkeys and staff at a lab animal breeding centre. Richard Prestons book, The Hot Zone, describes the incident in a very scary and interesting way.
I'm not claiming its the End of Days, merely that it is sensible to keep an eye on the situation, and be prepared to take sensible precautions if necessary, i.e. keeping off public transport should it turn into a pandemic. The problem is that thankfully, the disease is confined to an area of the world that is poor and opportunities to travel are limited. However, as the disease infects more and more people, it becomes more difficult to contain, particularly in an area of the world with very porous borders. The key battleground is Nigeria, because it contains a large, relatively affluent by west African standards, population, which are mobile. There are certainly many Nigerian people here in Dublin. There is also the added complication of the fundamentalist group, Procol Harum, in the area, and it would absolutely amaze me if they didn't exploit the opportunity to strike at the government with a ready made biological weapon. If ebola got a grip in Nigeria, one can easily imagine Mr and Mrs Umbongo taking a trip to visit their extended families in Dublin, or London or wherever, and given the up to 3 week incubation period of the disease the threat of ebola reaching the UK and Ireland is, in my yes, a clear and present danger. I am sure an outbreak would be contained but how many people might get it before that happens? I know I come across as eccentric but I was the NBC training officer for my company and I am a scientist who spends a good deal of my time thinking about this stuff, and all I am saying is that one shouldn't panic, but one should keep "heads up" and be aware of developments, and also be able to read between the lines of what we are being told and what we see.

Had to search for the latest Tony news on bbc, it's all going a bit quiet despite the situation continuing to get worse (apart from Nigeria being declared Tony free). linkyI can't quite comprehend this WHO rep pictured standing next to two nurses in full PPE in his fucking civics; I don't know what risk he is at but fuck me it doesn't set a good example either way!

Personally, I'm all for approaching the WHO and requesting Ebola be officially nicknamed "Tony".
Roger Daltry can fuck off though

There is more chance of being fucked by Poisoned Monkey than there is of catching Ebola.
Shit like what the Ausies are doing just fuels fear around the world. Already there are wacky Americans who are too scared to be in a crowd and are not attending sports and music events incase they meet Tony Ebola.
